When to Visit Egypt: A Complete Guide
Egypt's climate varies significantly throughout the year, and choosing the right time to visit can greatly enhance your experience. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you plan your perfect trip.
October to April: Peak Season
This is the best time to visit Egypt, with mild temperatures and clear skies. December and January are the busiest months, so expect larger crowds and higher prices, but the weather is perfect for sightseeing.
October-November
Pleasant temperatures (20-28°C), fewer crowds than peak season, and great for exploring both Cairo and Upper Egypt. Ideal for Nile cruises.
December-January
Peak tourist season. Cool days (15-22°C) perfect for walking tours. Nights can be chilly, especially in the desert. Book accommodations well in advance.
February-March
Still excellent weather with slightly fewer crowds. Great time for visiting temples and taking Nile cruises. Spring flowers begin to bloom.
April
Warm but comfortable (22-30°C). Easter period can be busy. Good time to visit before summer heat arrives.
May to September: Off-Season
Summer months bring intense heat, especially in Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan). However, you'll find fewer crowds, lower prices, and the Red Sea resorts remain pleasant.
May-June
Heat begins to intensify. Still manageable in Cairo and along the coast. Good for Red Sea beach holidays. Early morning and evening tours recommended.
July-August
Hottest months (35-40°C+ in Upper Egypt). Best for Red Sea resorts where sea breezes provide relief. Very few tourists in Luxor and Aswan. Hotels offer significant discounts.
September
Heat starts to decrease. Good transition month with improving conditions. Still fewer crowds than peak season.
Special Events and Festivals
Consider timing your visit around:
- Ramadan - Dates vary each year. Some services may be limited during daylight hours, but evenings are vibrant.
- Easter - Popular time for Christian pilgrims. Book well in advance.
- New Year - Very busy period. Prices are highest.
- Abu Simbel Sun Festival - Occurs twice yearly (February 22 and October 22) when sunlight illuminates the inner sanctum.
Regional Considerations
Cairo & Giza: Can be visited year-round, though summer is hot. Winter is ideal.
Luxor & Aswan: Best from October to April. Summer heat is intense.
Red Sea (Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh): Great year-round destination. Summer is perfect for beach activities.
Alexandria: Mediterranean climate makes it pleasant most of the year, though winter can be rainy.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors, we recommend October to April for the best overall experience. If you're looking to save money and don't mind the heat, May-June and September offer good value. For beach-focused trips, summer months at Red Sea resorts are perfect.
